"You can stick it up your jumper!" [Outstagram]

Line drawing of a man moving towards a desk with speech bubble and finger pointing at startled man behind desk, who wears a necktie.
“You can stick it up your jumper!”

Always found this phrase very satisfying, as an expression of outraged contempt (while also being suitable for young children’s ears).

And that’s the spirit behind this picture, which I drew of myself (the standing figure), long before I became a Speccy Man.

I remember that it was very satisfying to draw, perhaps because the scene was never going to take place in reality.

As I recall, the figure behind the desk was somewhat modelled on the then-editor of The Sunday Times, where I worked at the time. But the passing of years has removed from memory any specific grievance.

So: please accept the drawing as a generalised, heartfelt representation of – something.

I was reminded about this drawing today when I read a fascinating blog post by Matt Webb about the source of the phrase stick it up your jumper. Matt Webb doesn’t know it but he has inspired a number of recent tweaks to my website, including this ⬇️.
