Star of David

Drawing of a yellow Star of David.

Handwritten text: 'I wasn't lucky enough to be born Jewish'.

Handwritten text: 'but also I wasn't lucky enough to be born Black'.

Handwritten text: 'I know that Black Lives Matter'.

Handwritten text: 'I'm a white man
Maybe I don't have the right to Stand With Black people, or Stand With women, or with Jewish people.
What does that even mean?'

Handwritten text: 'But right now I don't see many non-Jews saying much to support Jewish people.
So here I am with my little wonky Star of David'. Ends with drawing of yellow star.

I don’t know what to say exactly, except that this anti-Jewish crime is terrible, should never happen – let alone routinely – and it’s happening routinely near my home in north London.

On TV last night I watched my local Member of Parliament say she holds the hands of her children more tightly than before when she goes to synagogue.

This isn’t something that non-Jews can reasonably ignore – can leave to Jewish people to worry about.

If you can’t do something positive to help, please at least stop doing things that cause harm.

Nobody can point to (eg) a single isolated Tweet and say: that was the cause.

But the steady drip of casual, unfocused hatred – of the kind l’ve seen, shamefully, by people I know – does gradually yield these kinds of results.
