Got a statement this week from the people who manage payments for Public Lending Rights.
Every time someone borrows one of my books from a library (in the UK?), I get 12.4 pence, and the accumulated sum is transferred to my bank account at around this time each year.
Shockingly, it turns out that I’m not going to be able to buy a private jet with the proceeds of last year’s lending. I’m not going to be able to buy a Rolls Royce. Not even a box of fine cigars.
Which is just as well because I don’t want any of those things. Anyway, that’s not what I wanted to write about.
But I was delighted to noticed that my novel, which has received virtually zero support from me in the publicity department, was borrowed more frequently than any of my books except the one about public speaking.
Here’s the top three for 2025:
- A Modest Book About How To Make An Adequate Speech
- What If The Queen Should Die? (⬆️ from 3rd place in 2024)
- How to Change The World (⬇️ from 2nd place in 2024)

How thrilling all this is.
