Speccy Breakdown zine: read the book's first pages

Eight pages, taken from the start of my new book, A Speccy Man Has A Breakdown.

Eight-page zine, standing on a cutting mat, with pink front cover reading A Speccy Man Has A Breadown, over a drawing of a man doing a sun salute.

Cover of the same zine, lying down as a hand moves to open it.

Like the book itself, the zine shows my name in the same handwritten style as my website.

Opening spread shows a photo of a young man smiling.

This is me.
Early 20s, in a student flat with three friends and my girlfriend.
Had no idea what was coming.
But who does?

Double-page spread showing photo on the left of a man in an opticians, smiling, and on the right a rough expressionistic portrait of the man looking miserable.

Me again, late 40s.
Getting measured up for a pair of varifocals, my first proper, full-time spectacles.
I’m smiling, because that’s what you do, in photos.
But inside I’m miserable.
Really I felt more like this.

Double-page spread showing two more expressionistic pictures of a miserable man in specs.

When I saw the psychiatrist I told her what troubled me.
After about an hour she surprised me by asking if I would like to be admitted to psychiatric hospital.
And I surprised myself by saying, Oh God yes please.

Back copy of the zine shows a speccy man looking out of a window cheerfully and a quote.

“A tough, shining, fiercely charming thing” – Rhik Samadder
