A Speccy Man Has A Breakdown - day 62

Gone to the printer

Hear me read this.

<< Previously

Quick update: the book has now gone to the printer.

I’m a bit embarrassed it took me as long as it did I kept finding one more thing to fix – a typo here, a page order there, and – for a few days – every time someone else bought a copy, I reopened the book’s thank-you page to add their name.

I had to stop. From now on new buyers will be listed with enormous gratitude only on the web.

But hey. It’s done now. 90 copies on order. Stitch-bound, as promised, which partly explains why it’ll take nearly a month to print – the binding is fiddly and the machine is in demand. As more orders come in, I’ll add to the print run right up until the press starts running.

And after that, fresh orders, until (with a spot of luck) all 250 have gone.

Ninety, as I may have said already, is not going to impress Penguin Random House, but it’s considerably more than my Eeyorish expectation, in March. I’m thrilled. Also a bit terrifying, because the cost of printing all those hardbacks is real money, and I keep worrying I’ve done something wrong somewhere.

You may have noticed these emails went a bit quiet. I’ve come over rather shy as the audience for all this has grown – which is, obvs, completely back to front. People signed up because they’re interested, not because they wish to silence me. But there it is.

A consequence of that sudden onset shyness: the previous post in this series went up on the site but I never actually sent it as an email. If you’d like to read it, it’s here:

It covers, among other things, why I decided not to bother with an ISBN. (Short version: the plumbing has nothing to plumb.)

More soon.

Just 160 copies of the limited edition hardback remain available.
Who else might like one? Please pass this on.
