The Observer, Print Edition

A schnauzer sits on top of a scattered pile of sections of The Observer newspaper, with the slogan “Support print journalism"

If you have never read the physical, printed edition you may not realise The Observer even exists.

But I bet you have read it on The Guardian website, where all Observer stories, features, columns and pictures appear under The Guardian’s name.

The Observer is the oldest Sunday paper in the world, having started publishing in 1791.

A spread in The Observer from two or three years ago. Drawn by me.

The Guardian acquired The Observer 30 years ago and is now selling it to Tortoise Media.

(That link is to a VERY compelling series of tweets about the sale, by one of the greatest contemporary names in Observer journalism.)

Tortoise promises to keep the print edition AND create a strong online presence for The Observer.

The idea is to replicate something of the transformation of The Atlantic, which was previously failing and is now thriving.

Anyone who does that gets 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 from me.

But the deal isn’t done yet.

If you want to support print journalism you can do that with your hard cash.
