Unlike other Outstagram posts on this website, this one never appeared on Instagram. The drawing predated my use of Instagram. But when I started to set up the series on this site, this was one of the first pictures I chose to include.
I love Andrew Marvell, and I love The Garden especially. I drew this when my daughter was very very young. It was inspired by her cloth books: I had the idea that maybe there could be a cloth-book version of classic poetry.
The particular style of the drawings here is intended to reflect the style of stump work, which was popular in Marvell’s day.
