The one at the back, sobbing and snotting
An early talk about my breakdown, given at Mishcon de Reya in 2019
This is a recording of the first few minutes of an early talk about my breakdown – given at the law firm Mishcon de Reya in the spring of 2019, and only just rediscovered.
It’s not the whole talk. Just the first three to four minutes, but it gives a flavour of how the talks were framed.
Watching it now, I don’t know why I described my younger self as a snotty young man. I don’t think that’s fair, and (more to the point) it didn’t help to say it.
But hey, we all mis-speak occasionally. And I was feeling nervous.
Overall, I’m satisfied with how I set things up: created a sense of fellowship with the people watching, asked them to respect privacy, and gave explicit permission to take what they like and leave the rest.
The talk that followed went very well: I showed my drawings, and gave context, much as I have now done in my book A Speccy Man Has A Breakdown. At the end, there was a Q&A.
It was after this particular talk, at the law firm Mishcon de Reya, that I received a message from someone saying that she was “the one at the back, sobbing and snotting”.
