This couple established one of the world’s finest art book publishers after coming to the UK when the Nazis took power in Austria.
Must have been strange – at first, anyway – to go to Frankfurt after the war.
This drawing is based on the only photograph I can find of the couple together on the whole of the Internet. It’s a black-and-white photo but I decided to do the picture in colour.
I would very much like to have the publishing company they founded – still family owned – accept me as a kind of artist in residence, to continue the series I started recently at Sort Of books.
Plainly, it would help if I actually asked the company first (!), so I am posting this to make myself accountable.
10 points to the first person who correctly identifies the couple and the company they founded.
(Points don’t mean anything, by the way, they’re just points.)

Update: By an extraordinary coincidence, while working on something else, I was given the contact details for the son of the people in this picture. Naturally, I sent it to him. He replied:
“Not at all bad considering you never clapped eyes on them! The cigar smoking geezer on the right is George Weidenfeld, another one who started off as an independent but eventually sold his firm to Orion Books.”
