Dogwood on Holly Hill, Hampstead | Outstagram

Dogwood on Holly Hill: digital drawing of a wintry scene.
Originally posted on Instagram, 4 January 2025.

The buildings in the background are the ones adjacent to the Holly Bush pub – which has gone absolutely bonkers with influencers taking Hampstead selfies – so I shall not mention it here – it would only encourage them – doh!

Too late.

Maybe one day people will rush to take selfies beside this pretty red-branched dogwood.

You saw it here first.

Welcome

I’m John-Paul. I’m a writer and artist. I live in London.

Writing

I’ve published seven books, in 16 languages: fiction, illustrated poetry, memoir and non-fiction.

For years I was a journalist – editor and writer – on the Financial Times magazine and The Sunday Times of London.

I’ve published many things in serial form, as email newsletters. Some function as courses, like this one:

Write, Illustrate and Print a Micro-Memoir
A 30-day course.

Speaking

Over the years, I’ve done a lot of public speaking, talks and workshops.

People seem to like hearing about How to Change The World, and about my breakdown and recovery.

Giving talks gave me an idea for another book, about speaking. It’s based on a unique combination of classical rhetoric and theatrical improvisation: I trained with the best.

Today, I teach others to speak with confidence:

On Interviews

A few years ago, I asked some people about conversations that had changed their lives.

Art

A few years ago, I had a breakdown. In psychiatric hospital, making art was a big part of my recovery.

Today, making art is a big part of how I make a living.
