That office no longer exists

Three people with glasses of champagne in a gallery, looking at a framed picture on the wall to the left.

The private view, 18 August.

I draw people where they work, and I draw what is around them – a favourite mug, the photographs on a wall, a pile of books, a dog bed, the light through a door. We talk while I work, so most of these things turn out to have a story attached.

We were looking here at the picture of Patrick. The office in it no longer exists – he moved on, and the firm moved away. The drawing is what remains.

Not a likeness so much as a store of memory.
