During lockdown, Sarah-Jane played a game with her friend Danny. She would walk somewhere in Lewes, where they live, and ask him: where do you think I am now?
The only clues were sounds. Birdsong echoing off a wall. Kids screaming. How close the road was.
“I’m in a big open space and there are people lying around me, but they’re very quiet.”
And no whoosh of the distant A27. He guessed a cemetery.
She told me about the game in conversation a few days ago, and I asked her to tell it again, in a voice note. She warned me she has a habit of deleting these by mistake. This one survived.
There’s also a lockdown story about missing David Sedaris, and a producer she has never met who did something kind about it.
Listen to Sarah-Jane’s voice note
It’s part of my occasional series of interviews done entirely by voice note.
