I’ve tried paper diaries, digital calendars and a hybrid. Somehow, I still managed to miss a class I was supposed to lead, with 30 people waiting for me.
That experience has stayed with me. So has the frustration of being self-employed and spending half a day going to someone else’s office for a meeting that fits around their lunch hour, not my work.
Rachel asked me how I fit work, family and everything else into my calendar. The honest answer is that I can’t keep them entirely separate. I like my work, and some of it feels like fun. If I’m drawing a picture that might become a book or an art print, is that work?
I also talk about why I plan in 12-week periods, why I try to protect my mornings for creative work, and how I’ve started using AI to deal with one of the things that most does my head in: my calendar.
I recorded the conversation as a voice note, and you can listen here.
