“Sort Of Artist In Residence” | Inside a small but mighty publisher

This is the HQ of Sort Of Books, publisher of this year’s Booker Prize winner.

I spent part of a day there – drawing Mark Ellingham (left) and Natania Jansz at work, and their English Setter Wooster (sleeping, far left):

In case it’s not already obvious: the company’s HQ is their home. Upstairs, they were hosting their Booker-winning author, Shehan Karunatilaka. Later in the day, he would be presented with his gilded prize.

I thought I might post something here about my process, although I haven’t finished yet.

While I’m in the building, I make many quick drawings. This seems to create a kind of muscle-memory that comes in useful later:

I also take lots of reference photos, to use singly or combined into a collage.

Later, I will refer to the photos as I make drawings. Some on paper:

Others, like the one at the top of this page, are done on my iPad using the amazing Procreate app.

Yesterday I went to get one of the iPad pictures printed on A3 archival Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper. I’m quite pleased.

Needs to be bigger, though – and there are lots more images still to do.
