Publish Your Book, with JPF / 2
Introducing. . .
A small group, for authors writing book proposals and actual books.
In Publish Your Book, with JPF, members get editorial guidance, accountability and mutual support in two live zoom calls each month, at midday on the first and third Wednesdays.
In those sessions, we don’t waste time talking in general about writing. We talk about the specific issues you’re wrestling with, and look closely at pieces of writing, so that you leave with practical results.
Write the proposal, and the book
Over several years now I’ve worked as ghost-writer, co-writer and mentor with authors who already had book deals (including both UK and US) authors who haven’t got a deal yet, and some who don’t want conventional publishing.
To be clear: members of the group are at different points on the publishing spectrum – and this is a GOOD thing.
Whatever the writer’s situation, I strongly encourage you to write a book proposal so that you have a sense of what you are aiming at with the book.
Writing a book proposal is a very different experience. It’s always going to feel a bit more like marketing. And that can be excruciating when you do it alone.
Platform building
As hinted above, one of the biggest impediments to getting a publishing deal is the lack of a proven “platform” for authors. This can be demoralising, causing some would-be authors to give up before they really started.
By creating this group I’m encouraging members to see each other on various parts of the path to publication, and to find mutual encouragement in that.
Publishing a book is not a competition. On the contrary, it should be a relief to acknowledge that we’re all at different stages with different book projects.
A private group for members and me
As well as meeting on Zoom twice each month, members have access to a totally secure encrypted group on Signal.
In the group, you can post questions and comments and get to know each other between zooms.
Additional resources
Additional resources, some of it available already, includes practical guidance on writing, including timeless issues such as scene-setting with all five senses, using dialogue to drive narrative, building suspense and pattern-making across a whole book.
Additionally, I’ll show you how to use AI to make sense of ideas you generate by talking off the top of your head; to brainstorm tirelessly and quickly; and draft and rewrite at speed.
And you’ll be able to spin off material out of your book to help with promotion before and after publication. This spin-off material may take the form of writing, audio or video.
Members pay a monthly fee
Some people will want to stay for as long as it takes to write a book proposal, finish the book, and take it up to publication.
Others may only want to write the proposal.
Some may want to turn the proposal into (say) a mini-series of emails to send in advance to fans who subscribe to a newsletter, building expectation and winning valuable real-time feedback as you write the book.
Others, instead of writing emails, may want to produce a mini-series of videos.
Whatever your original reason for joining, you’re free to leave (obviously!) at any time.
