Seeing a major British law firm publicly discuss its financial performance still blows my mind. Some of you may know that I spent four years living in London in the 90s as the editor of a British legal publication, Legal Business. They were some of the most fun and challenging years of my career. I loved writing about the British legal community. Back then, this kind of information was absolutely never shared publicly by any major law firm – until my colleagues at Legal Business and I decided to try to find out how much these top law firms made. With a series of coordinated phone calls to partners, we simply asked. It took some good old fashioned reporting skills., but little by little, we got the information and published it. We created the first Legal Business 100 and it spiralled from there. To my colleagues at Legalease from the early 1990s, I am toasting you virtually from afar.
She tagged me and a few other colleagues. I replied:
That was one of the most terrifying and fulfilling bits of journalism I ever did, and you made it such fun Karen.
If I might add, this happened on my first week, so, yeah.
