I wrote my Master’s dissertation on a floppy disk.
I had learned to touch-type at great speed and I knew how to use a word processor – they’d been installed in the university computer centre, on all three PCs.
I considered myself to be very advanced.
I used a “high density” 3.5-inch floppy disk, still so-called even though its bendy circular interior had been encased in hard square plastic. It contained unimaginable amounts of space: 1.44 MB – nearly one-and-a-half megabytes!
That’s equivalent to a whole novel – but less than a typical photo you might take today on a smartphone.
