Event: How to Enjoy Teaching Courses Online
LOCATION: Zoom, Online
EVENT DATES: Tuesday 29th October 2024 at 19.00 GMT
This course is not open to the public. It’s for authors who teach at the Arvon Foundation. But I’m leaving it here so that others can see the kinds of thing we’ll cover.
Teaching online can feel daunting, but you’re not alone.
In this session, designed to address common fears and anxieties with practical solutions and support, we’ll explore:
- How to capture the unique atmosphere of Arvon’s in-person workshops in a virtual setting?
- How to help participants feel confident they’re in a safe space where they can take creative risks?
- Worries about students zoning out or multi-tasking during sessions. We’ll share ideas for keeping everyone engaged and active.
- Technology can be intimidating. We’ll navigate the essential tools, and graceful ways to handle hiccups.
- How to stop feeling like an imposter and embrace our new(ish) role as online tutors with confidence.
- How to translate your in-person teaching style to an online format without losing the essence of what you do? We’ll explore flexible approaches that work.
- How to create – or allow – moments of spontaneity online?
- Balancing workshops, tutorials, and writing time online can be tricky. We’ll look at ways to structure our courses that keep things flowing smoothly.
How to protect your own time.- Meaningful feedback without face-to-face interaction can be challenging, but online sessions can also provide opportunities that aren’t available offline.
- One of the best parts of Arvon is the sense of community. We’ll brainstorm how to foster that same camaraderie and support among our students online – during the course and into the future.
Whether you’re new to this or looking to refine your approach, we want you to get what you need from the session: your time is precious! You’ll have plenty of opportunties to ask questions, and even practise key principles, if you wish.
