Some time ago, I met Steve Chapman in Hampstead for coffee. (He’s not often up this way.)
We both routinely carry a sketchbook, and we ended up drawing each other, then added captions with something the other had said.
On the left, I present Steve as I saw him that afternoon, and one of the things that came out of his mouth – the kind of thing I like to catch in the wild: “I have a different camera for the bingo machine.”
On the right, how Steve saw me. And a phrase of mine that Steve had evidently heard: “I call them adequate projects.”
Which I do, and I still do.
A different, more finished portrait of Steve is in my show this week – he appears with Jo Wood, the pair of them arranged loosely after Hockney’s Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, with a stuffed raven where Percy would be.
