This was one of the first drawings I made in psychiatric hospital, after I was admitted in 2018 with depression and anxiety.
Nurses took away anything I could hurt myself with – iPhone cable, medication, razors – but they couldn’t take away the negative self-talk, and they didn’t take away my pen and sketchbook.
Every 15 minutes, a nurse looked in to see that I was OK, but I waited an hour or two to have my history taken. That’s when I drew this, to capture a sense of the insistence of the repetitive thoughts, churning in my head.
